Welcome to the blog of Members’ Forum 2017.

Welcome Note from the Secretary of State for Wales

To begin with, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to you all to the Chartered Institute of Building’s International Members Forum here in Cardiff.

Wales is honoured to host such a prestigious event, following in the footsteps of Hong Kong and others in welcoming members from across the globe to Cardiff.

Cardiff has had the privilege of hosting several high profile events this summer including the Champions League final, and this forum is another to add to the ever growing list.

This goes a long way in showing that Wales, and the rest of the UK, continues to be the same outward-looking, globally minded, big thinking country we always have been – demonstrated by the ability of attracting major brands like Aston Martin to Wales. The UK, including Wales remains a great investment destination with our science and arts, our engineering and our creativity, respected the world over.

Construction is a key part of the Welsh economy, with in excess of 12,000 companies employing over 100,000 people. Accounting for around 10% of GDP, more than £2.3bn is spent per annum within the Welsh construction industry, placing Welsh companies at the forefront of new developments within this sector.
